Parenting Coordination

Typically the PC appointment follows the completion and legal resolution of a Child Custody
Evaluation. This is commonly a minimum of a two year appointment. Parenting coordination is a child-focused process conducted by a licensed mental health or family law professional under the rules or laws of their jurisdiction, with practical experience with high conflict family law cases.

Parenting Coordination is extremely helpful in reducing litigation and court appearences that helps families stabilize
their lives in high conflict custody matters. The parents agree to assign circumscribed authorities to the PC. The
process of Parenting Coordination facilitates the resolution of disputes in a timely manner, educates co-parents
about their children’s needs, and facilitates decisions that provide a timely resolution to specific problems.

Dr. Kenneth B. Perlmutter Parenting Coordinator expertise:

  • Over 100 families served
  • Twenty five years of experience

As Parenting Coordinator my goal is to always work with the parents to help them resolve areas of disagreement and when they cannot agree I will make decisions and orders (as appropriate) regarding the areas over which I have jurisdiction under the appointment.

Parenting Coordination Process:

Setting up a new matter.

Consultations with the parents’ counsel in order to review the case and determine the needs of the family.

Clarification on what documents will be received by the Parenting
Coordinator

Extensive individual interviews and
clarifying initial concerns and issues. An initial joint interview to review both the process of the PC
work and their agendas.

The parents receive the Policies and Procedures for using by Parenting Coordinator which fully explains the process of the work.

I have found that high conflict family matters are quite amenable to effective management and positive change when the process of PC is followed and the parents know precisely what to expect. Many cases require a fair amount of work in the start up phase and then can be managed with both regular meetings (e.g. from monthly to biannually) and being responsive to exigent concerns in a timely matter.
